Greg spent nearly three decades in college basketball. He was head coach at several well-known schools such as Marshall University, University of Charleston and University of Pikeville. He also served as assistant basketball coach at UCLA (11 National Championships) where he became a part of the UCLA storied tradition. He worked for Head Coach Jim Harrick and assisted along side Lorenzo Romar (University of Washington) and Steve Lavin (St John's University). He also ran the famed UCLA basketball camps!
During his illustrious career as a player, head coach and assistant coach, Greg participated in more than 500 college victories. As head coach, he managed to maintain a 90% graduation rate. At Marshall he amassed an 87-17 (84%) home record and finished his coaching career as the third winningest coach in school basketball history! His leadership and mentoring abilities propelled many assistant coaches to head coaching positions and top assistant positions including: Head Coach Gregg Marshall (Wichita State University), Assistant Coach Kevin Keatts (University of Louisville), Assistant Coaches Jeff Boals and Dave Dickerson (Ohio State University), Assistant Coach Steve Snell (Air Force Academy), Head Coach Donnie Jones and Associate Head Coach Shawn Finney (University of Central Florida), Head Coach Mark Downey (University of Charleston), Head Coach Bryan Poore (West Virginia State University), and Head Coach Jeff Burkhamer (Lander University). Additionally, Greg worked for Dana Altman (University of Oregon) and Bob Zuffelato (Toronto Raptors) as an assistant at Marshall.
Greg’s youth basketball camps have attracted over 20,000 participants, and they sell out every year. Many of Greg's campers having gone on to sign full basketball scholarships! His "Wizard White" ball handling show has been performed at numerous top universities such as UCLA, Wake Forest University, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, University of Tennessee, University of Maryland, University of Alabama, Ohio State University, Virginia Tech, and Iowa State University to name a few and has been seen by over 50,000 campers!
Greg is a native of Mullens, West Virginia. He was a high school All-American who once scored 50 points and had 15 assists in the same game. As a senior, he was named "West Virginia High School Player of the Year" and he was selected to tour with the United States All Star Team. Greg is also a member of the Mullens High School Hall of Fame.
Greg played collegiately at Marshall University, where he continued rocketing to stardom. He started 113 consecutive games at the point guard position, had 18 assists in a single game, had 701 career assists, and is a member of the 1000 point club. Greg was a two-time Marshall MVP, a two time team captain, and three time All Southern Conference selection.
In 1981 Greg was 1 of 64 college seniors selected to participate in the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Portsmouth, Virginia for the NBA and European professional teams. In 1994, Greg was selected to the Marshall University Hall of Fame where he still holds numerous records.
In 1996, Greg left UCLA to become Marshall University’s head basketball coach (following Billy Donovan, now with the Florida Gators). Greg held that position for seven years, during which he had numerous accomplishments including being the 1997 Southern Conference Coach Of The Year and a $6 million renovation of the Henderson Center. Greg also became Marshall’s third winningest coach out of 30 during the program’s history. Greg was known for his recruiting prowess and frequent top 50 recruiting classes, including Marshall’s first NBA player in 30 years, Tamar Slay. Greg also recruited J.R. VanHoose (Kentucky’s 1990’s Player of the Decade). Slay and Vanhoose are Marshall's third and fourth leading scorers! Vanhoose is also Marshall's second leading rebounder. Greg's 2001 Marshall team lead all of college basketball in 3 point field goal percentage at 44%. During his tenure at Marshall White had two players, Keith Veney and Ronald Blackshear, hit 15 3's in a game which still serve as NCAA records. White's Marshall basketball camps are the largest sports camps in Marshall University history.
In 2010 Greg joined longtime friend Jeff Schneider (former Virginia Tech great) as a partner with BIG SHOTS, the nation's premier provider of grass-roots basketball tournaments! 40,000 players participated in BIG SHOTS events in 2011 throughout the United States. The 2011 summer was the first BIG SHOTS basketball camps under Greg's direction.
Greg White has been a motivational speaker and consultant for Converse, AND1 and Reebok. He has spoken for many top United States companies and corporations (Mercedes, BMW, IBM, Subway, NiSource, BB&T Banks, West Virginia Lottery, Chevrolet, Holzer Medical Clinics, St Mary's Hospitals, West Virginia Treasury Department, etc.). He holds two degrees from Marshall University: a Bachelor's Degree in Business and a Master’s Degree in Sports Management. Greg resides in Charleston, West Virginia, with his wife, Donna Slayton M.D., and their two children, Hunter and Alexa.
